Por segundo año consecutivo, United Way Panamá, Procter and Gamble, y Voluntarios de Panamá se unen  para apoyar los esfuerzos que realiza el Ministerio de Salud para promover la salud materno-infantil en la Comarca Ngäbe Buglé.  El Proyecto ´Mamás Seguras´ busca incentivar el uso de insumos de higiene y disminuir la mortalidad materna e infantil en la zona que está catalogada como la de mayor porcentaje de estos riesgos a nivel nacional. A través de unos ´kits´ de apoyo que se le entrega a la madre al ingresar al albergues se complementan los servicios que allí se ofrecen. Los ´kits´ contienen productos para asegurar la higiene personal de la madre durante su estadía en los albergues, al igual que productos necesarios para el período posterior al parto y para el recién nacido. Para iniciar, más de 70 voluntarios de Procter & Gamble, estudiantes del Colegio William H Kilpatrick, Student United Way-Academia Interamericana de Panamá, y Doctor Yaso Panamá participaron de una actividad para armar estos ´kits que  fueron posteriomente distribuidas alos albergues maternos del MINSA  en Llano Ñopo, Kusapín, San Felix, Soloy, y Hato Chamí en la Comarca Ngäbe Buglé.

Se aprovecho la ocasión para también armar 400 ´kits´de emergencia donados con insumos de Procter & Gamble que serán distribuidos por la Cruz Roja entre desplazados por desastres naturales.

‘Mamás Seguras’: a collaboration to reduce maternal and infant mortality in the region Ngäbe-Buglé

For the second year in a row, United Way Panama, Procter and Gamble, and Panama Volunteers come together to support the efforts of the Ministry of Health to promote maternal and child health in the Ngäbe Bugle region. The ‘Mamás Seguras’ project seeks to encourage the use of hygiene products to reduce maternal and infant mortality in the area which is ranked as the highest percentage at a national level. These ‘hygiene kits’ are supplied to the mother when she enters a shelter before giving birth, as a complement for the array of services she’s given there. The’kits’ contain products to ensure personal hygiene of the mother during her stay in the shelters, as well as products needed for the postpartum period and the newborn. To start, more than 70 volunteers from Procter & Gamble, students from the Instituto Willliam H. Kilpatrick, Student United Way-Academia Interamericana de Panama, and Doctor Yaso Panamá participated in an activity to build these kits that were subsequently distributed to the MINSA maternal shelters in Llano Ñopo, Kusapín, San Felix, Soloy and Hato Chami in the Ngäbe Bugle region.

While building these maternal kits, the opportunity was taken to also build 400 emergency relief kits donated by Procter & Gamble to be distributed by the Red Cross to displaced people and families by natural disasters.
